"Chase is exactly what the title suggests. A fast paced, unrelenting musical drama that takes the listener into a world of excitement and tension. A building introduction playing variations of the main theme slowly builds intensity as it launches into the first section. The main theme is heard in the trumpets with the accompanying rhythmic motifs also being established in the horns and strings. From there it quickly transitions into a secondary theme in the woodwinds. These three main ideas shape the rest of the piece, with almost all other musical material stemming from them.
Unpredictable meter changes, offbeat accents, rapid scale passages, and various modulations and climaxes all lend towards the feeling of being chased. One brief respite occurs about two-thirds into the piece and offers the listener a sense of escape, but it is not long before the chaser is right on their heels again. All the themes, motifs, and variations that have developed over the course of the piece come together at the end for a large dramatic climax."
